Ruins of the palace of the Emperor Diocletian at Spalatro in Dalmatia c.1764
Spalatro in Dalmatia is now known as Split in Croatia on the Dalmatian coast, west of Dubrovnik.
Map of Split, its fortifications and harbour. The source of this copperplate engraving is Robert Adams’ first publication. Adams (1728-1792) was a celebrated eighteenth century architect and designer. His Grand Tour travels included a five week sojourn in Spalatro (now Split in Coatia), where he visited and studied the palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian built around AD300. The map measures approx 51cm X 66cm plus margins. It is decorated with two views of the Roman ruins. The engraver was Michael Rooker. You might want to consider reframing the map as the mount is slightly discoloured. The faint foxing throughout does not detract from the beauty of this piece.
